UK Government Funds Digitary Shared Service

A project led by Liverpool John Moores University will see seven universities live on a Digitary shared service early in 2012.

Work is progressing at project level and at the partner institutions, which also include Bath Spa University, Coventry University, Cranfield University, De Montfort University, the School of Oriental and African Studies and the University of Sheffield.  Everything that institutions can do using Digitary installed on-campus will be possible through the service, giving universities the choice of opting for the service or implementing the system on-site as part of the institution's IT infrastructure.

The project supports the implementation of the Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR), which aims to give more information to graduate recruiters than the traditional summative classification (First Class Honours, 2.1 etc), as this is considered no longer fit-for-purpose because of grade inflation.  The information provided may include awards, volunteering, Student Union representation and other non-academic information to enhance the employability of students.

The service will also be used to issue and authenticate other types of documents, including transcripts, confirmations of enrollment, Council Tax exemption certificates and Bank Status letters.

The project is being co-ordinated by the Joint Information Systems Committee and is funded through the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the Universities Modernisation Fund.
