FAQ

What is Digitary?

Digitary is a secure online service that allow organisations to issue secure digital records online, so that the subjects of those records can access and share them on the web with third parties. This eliminates the hassle associated with having to produce original paper documents.

What certified online records can I get through Digitary?

Digital transcripts, degree certificates, and other official documents/statements are available to students and graduates of Digitary-enabled education providers. Some organisations use Digitary to issue Police Clearance/Vetting statements, so that the recipients can share them with employers to help streamline the vetting process.

Who uses Digitary?

Many higher education institutions worldwide use Digitary to issue their records. In fact, creating between them over half a million secure records. Digitary records are verified by employers, local government, universities and credential evaluators around the world.

How does it work?

Vetted organisations who sign up for Digitary are provided with a means to issue digitally certified documents and data to their students/graduates/customers/members. Individuals then receive their certified documents via the Digitary website. From there, individuals can share their records with third parties online, controlling who can see their records, and for how long. Third parties can use our service to receive and verify records in a variety of ways.

How can I trust a Digitary document?

Documents accessed via www.core.digitary.net can only be produced by vetted organisations that we have accepted into our network. The subjects of those documents (i.e. students and graduates) cannot upload or modify documents to the service. Furthermore, any PDF documents produced through this service contain cryptographic digital signatures to ensure their authenticity and integrity. These signatures are automatically verified by opening them in Adobe Reader version 9 or later. In Adobe Reader, you will see a “blue ribbon” digital signature at the top of the document that indicates its validity. Note that you must be online for verification to succeed.

Is Digitary technology based on open standards?

Yes. Digitary documents comply with relevant security standards, such as XAdES-A and PAdES-LTV from the the European Technical Standards Institute. Adherence to these standards ensures that Digitary provides the maximum level of security and legal validity of documents and data. Digital signatures are produced on FIPS 140-2 Level 3 cryptographic hardware devices, which are issued to officials of vetted organisations following a face to face identity verification process, which is independently audited.

Can I search the Digitary database?

No. By design, Digitary is not an enquiry system that allows you to search database of records. Instead, Digitary enables individuals to generate an access token for you, which they can send to you via email or another medium. You can use these tokens to verify their records online. This approach affords maximum data protection to the individual concerned.

How does Digitary protect records in the long term?

Digitary employs advanced, long-term cryptographic validity to ensure that the security of digital records have their cryptographic security periodically “upgraded” without any manual intervention required. This ensures that records stored in Digitary have up to date cryptographic protection, even long after they have been issued.

Are Digitary documents legally admissable?

Yes. Digitary documents contain Advanced Electronic Signatures (AES), which are regulatedby the EU’s eIDAS standards 2016. These signatures can only be produced by authorised officials of fully-vetted organisations, and require the use of certified physical hardware devices to issue documents. This provides an extremely high level of assurance and legal validity that documents are authentic, tamper evident, and non-repudiable.

What about non-EU countries?

The EU Digital Signature Directive sets a very high bar for international digital signature legislation. By complying with the Advanced Electronic Signature requirements of this EU law, our signatures also meet the less stringent requirements of other international laws including the Australian Electronic Transactions Act, the US E-SIGN and others.

How long are Digitary documents valid for?

It depends on the issuers policy. Some documents, such as status letters, expire after a few months or years. However, degree certificates and final transcripts are life-long documents and do not expire at all.

How can I verify a persons record using Digitary?

To view a persons record, you need to ask them to share it with you online. The simplest way is for them to generate a share URL, that is unique to their shared document(s), and that points either to the Digitary website (https://www.core.digitary.net), or at the website of the issuing organisation. You will need to check that the URL does correspond either to the Digitary website (https://www.core.digitary.net) or with the issuing institutions web domain.

Is there an easier way to receive certified documents?
